Honduran Coup d’état, a ‘win’ for the U.S.?

Today, Pepe Lobo will be inaugurated as the new President of Honduras in what many consider to be an institutionalization of the coup d’état which took place seven months ago. Lobo comes to the Presidency as a result of a highly disputed election process carried out by the coup regime. The elections, which have been widely condemned as illegitimate were boycotted by a large percentage of the Honduran population.

On Monday, January 25, 2010, U.S. Magistrate G. Mallon Faircloth sentenced three human rights advocates to six months in federal prison for carrying a protest against the School of the Americas onto the Fort Benning military base in Georgia. No Support for Haiti’s Undemocratic Elections

Demands:

1. No financial support for February legislative elections.
2. No recognition of elections that exclude major political parties, including Haiti’s largest party Fanmi Lavalas.
3. No election monitoring because it would legitimize an undemocratic process
4. Stop election interference by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), International Republican Institute (IRI), National Democratic Institute (NDI), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the U.S. Embassy.

U.S. – Canada Delegation Condemns Human Rights Situation in Haiti

[Today, Jan. 4, 2010 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, a delegation organized by the Latin America Solidarity Coalition held a press conference to denounce human rights violations in Haiti. Alliance for Global Justice National Co-Coordinators James Jordan and Chuck Kaufman are participating in the delegation. Following is the statement released to the press.]

The Latin American Solidarity Coalition, from the United States, and the Canada Haiti Action Network, wish to express our grave concern about human rights in Haiti. Our delegation came to investigate human rights violations, and in particular, violations by the United Nations’ MINUSTAH forces. We will send a report of our delegation’s findings to the United Nations, to the United States Congress, to President Barack Obama, to the Canadian government, and to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
