Activist and Community Use Guidelines
The Alliance for Global Justice feels happy that there was a moment in time when we had the resources to buy the old Star Dust Lounge and convert it to the Global Justice Center. AfGJ, Coalicion de Derechos Humanos, Pan Left, Occupy Tucson, Alianza Indigena Sin Fronteras, and Labor Party Advocates, have been in the Center for over a year now and uncounted community meetings and events have been hosted by our groups and by non-tenant groups. With over a year under our collective belts, AfGJ has identified some of the things that have worked well and some things that need improvement in order to continue to make this a space of effective community organizing at no, or low cost. Please read the following guidelines before scheduling your next event. If we are all conscious of the Global Justice Center as a shared spaced used for many different purposes by many different groups, we’ll be even more effective at meeting the needs of the Tucson Movement than we have for more than a year.
EVENT SCHEDULING GUIDELINES FOR THE GLOBAL JUSTICE CENTER (REMEMBER TO SIGN IN AND OUT AT SET UP AND CLOSE DOWN FOR YOUR EVENT!):
Events and AfGJ Vision, Mission and Principles: Progressive and activist groups, including GJC resident groups, who want to schedule events should familiarize themselves with the AfGJ Vision and Mission [ http://afgj.org/about ] and our Principles [ http://afgj.org/about/our-principles ] and make sure proposed events are not in conflict with them. To schedule an event: Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.Forms are also available in the small meeting room of the GJC. Only Blanca or James can add events to the calendar. PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB AFGJ STAFF DURING OFFICE HOURS TO MAKE REQUESTS. Send an email or fill out a form. Otherwise your event cannot be scheduled. Please try and schedule events at least 10 days in advance. Yes, we can do last minute scheduling…if we’re available. However, it is also quite possible that last minute requests will not be processed in time for the event to happen. In the event of rapidly developing, urgent struggles, we are, of course, willing to go the extra mile to try and accommodate mobilizations and their preparations.
Please observe “quiet time” in the open spaces during AfGJ’s morning staff meetings, Monday through Thursday. Special arrangements can be made if there is a need to schedule an event during this time.
Keys: Tenant organizations are responsible for opening and closing events they are sponsoring or co-sponsoring, and for set-up and clean-up. If there is no tenant co-sponsor, event coordinators must arrange ahead of time to pick up keys and get a brief orientation. To make arrangements, send an email to email@example.com
What to do if the time has come for an event, but no one has made arrangements to get a key: If the event has a tenant co-sponsor, contact them–it’s their responsibility. If the event does not have a tenant co-sponsor and arrangements have not been made ahead of time, our condolences–it is not possible to fix this at the last minute.
Sound and other equipment: GJC has two microphones. We also have a multi-channel soundboard that is available as needed. Both for resident and non-resident groups, people operating sound equipment must be trained or approved by AfGJ staff. For events where amplification is only needed for a speaker, a smaller amp is available for use with a short orientation. The GJC does not own any other sound or projection equipment.
PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE SOUND EQUIPMENT IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD AN ORIENTATION OR IF THERE IS NOT AN AUTHORIZED SOUND PERSON PRESENT. SOUND EQUIPMENT WILL NOT BE LOANED OUT.
Parking: Please do not park in the El Torero parking lot or the parking area of the Gloo Factory (across the street from the GJC). If the GJC parking areas are full, there are plenty of parking spaces on the streets nearby. Especially for events where more than 20 persons are expected to attend, we would ask that event coordinators monitor parking and have someone redirecting attendees from the El Torero parking lot until such time as they are closed.
RATES AND DEPOSITS:
Events sponsored by the Alliance for Global Justice and/or GJC tenant organizations will not be charged. Events that are co-sponsored by GJC tenant organizations with non-tenant groups are eligible for a 25% discount. Sponsoring GJC organizations are responsible for set-up, opening and closing the event, and for clean-up. Consistent violation of cleaning and security guidelines and protocols will result in the imposition of the same fees and deposits required for non-resident groups.
For events not co-sponsored by tenant organizations:
Cleaning fee and responsibility: There will be a $25 refundable fee for cleaning services. For large events, the fee may be raised to $50 at the discretion of the Alliance for Global Justice. A cleaning check list is posted in the building. Consistent failure to leave the space clean will result in a temporary to permanent ban from using the GJC.
Doors, keys and responsibilities: Non-residents using the space must pay a $25 refundable key deposit, Keys must be dropped in key box beside the front door (through slot in panel). Deposits may be denied if key is not returned after event. Failure to return the key at the pre-agreed upon time will result in loss of the key deposit. Leaving doors unlocked after an event will result in a temporary to permanent ban from scheduling events even for GJC residents. There is a sign in and sign out sheet by the front door. A responsible person for an event must sign in at the beginning and out at the end for all events. Any time a person comes in or leaves the building when no one else is there, they must sign in or out.
NOTE TO COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS GROUPS: We want the GJC to be a community space for the progressive movement as long as they fit in with the principles, vision and mission of the Alliance for Global Justice. The rents we charge do not actually cover all the operating expenses of the building. For small community meetings of no more than 25 people for the purpose of planning progressive mobilizations in keeping with AfGJ core principles, there will be no charge for using the facility. For large meetings and educational, cultural and other type events of a progressive nature, there will be a $60 fee for use of the auditorium. Petitions to waive or discount the fee may be considered on a case by case basis. Tenant groups will not be charged for any event of which they are the sole sponsor (or that they are sponsoring with other tenant groups). Events for which tenant groups are co-sponsors with non-tenant groups will be given a 25% discount.
CHARGES FOR PRIVATE PARTIES, FUNDRAISERS AND PAID ADMISSION EVENTS BY NON-GJC RESIDENT ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE NOT ORIENTED TOWARD PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT BUILDING: $150-$350 per day.
