Joint Statement Regarding President Obama’s Visit to Argentina – Declaración Unida Sobre la Visita de Presidente Obama (EE.UU.) a Argentina

(Versión en español después del inglés)

Human Rights Groups from Argentina and the United States unite to denounce the role of President Barack Obama as a promoter of US imperialism in the world, including its innumerable abuses of human rights among North America’s own people

Madres Argentina

Madres de Plaza de Mayo (Mothers of Plaza of May) declare opposition to Obama visit to Argentina. This group is made up of mothers of children who were disappeared by the US supported dictatorship during Argentina’s “Dirty War”, 1976-1983

Upon the announcement for President Barack Obama’s visit to Argentina March 23 and 24 of the current year, the Argentine League for the Rights of Humanity (Liga Argentina por los Derechos del Hombre) and the United States based Alliance for Global Justice, declare with one voice that this visit is truly a provocation of the memory of the victims of the genocide perpetrated in Argentina. This was carried out with the considered and decisive participation of the US government, its intelligence agencies, its big economic centers, its armed forces and a good part of its media apparatus.

We denounce as hypocrisy Obama’s rhetoric in presenting himself as a defender of Human Rights. Truly he is a Chief of State who has not ceased in invading nations, promoting actions of destabilization of non-submissive governments and making use of clandestine detention and torture sites throughout the world. These sites in turn inspired the installation of the infamous US prison usurped from territory of Guantánamo, Cuba.

Like a cruel joke, after receiving his Nobel Prize, President Obama began one of the most cruel, perverse, unjustified and colonialist beligerent campaigns in the history of the US against Libya. The United States is a country that since its beginnings has not ceased to self-proclaim a “manifest destiny”, that is to say, a colonialist expansionism that has only changed in form but not in sense. The maintenance and continuation of the Cuba blockade is proof of this, despite the advances in diplomatic relations and government to government talks (of which we approve and wish success).

The Obama administration and the United States government not only commit human rights violations outside the United States. It also commits them against its own people. The US has more than 2.3 million prisoners, including political prisoners, in a penitentiary system with the highest rate of incarceration in the world. This system is characterized by extreme inhumanity with more than 80,000 persons secluded in solitary confinement.

The racist US state shows itself every day in the form of police and prison brutality. Rather than promoting education for all, jobs and basic opportunities for the betterment of life, the US government stigmatizes and represses minorities, especially African-Americans, immigrants and indigenous persons. In the US, racism and stigmatization continue for all who resist imperial domination and its mandates. The nation’s schools are dominated by the most obscurantist sectors in order to undermine critical thinking.

The US government lead by Pres. Obama has done nothing to overcome the paradox of appealing again and again to the principle of “universal jurisdiction” while refusing to sign the principle human rights pacts and conventions, beginning with the Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, and the Rome Statute that established the International Criminal Court. The US government further fails to respect the nations who have signed these accords.

The embrace between Pres. Obama and Argentine President Mauricio Macri will be the embrace of two enemies of human rights. Their intended commitment to the humanitarian cause is no more than a farce in the service of imperial plans to destablize and overthrow popular processes that are moving forward in Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Brazil and Bolivia, among others.

Because of this the Argentine League for the Defense of Humanity and the Alliance for Global Justice of the United States, call on both our nations’ peoples to repudiate this embrace between Obama and Macri and instead act to build more and more bridges between our nations for the achievement of true democracy and the full force of all the rights of both peoples.
