Peruvian Indigenous Leader Detained

After Year of Exile, Pizango Detained Upon Arrival to Lima

We have learned from Amazon Watch that earlier today, Alberto Pizango, leader of the important Peruvian Amazon indigenous group AIDESEP was detained by police upon his arrival to Lima. Pizango had been exiled in Nicaragua for nearly a year, and was trying to return home today.

Pizango is of vital importance to the indigenous movement in Peru. Last year, he was instrumental in speaking out against President Garcia’s controversial decrees that attempted to open the Peruvian Amazon to more extraction and hurt native control over their land.

Please send a letter to President Garcia through this link in English or Spanish, telling him that you urge him to release Pizango and treat him with dignity!
