Set the Dreamers Free! Let Them Stay Home!

Dreamer 1.The “Dreamers” are leaders of the undocumented youth movement.  On July 22, 2013, Dreamers who had “self-deported” to Mexico crossed back into the US in Caps and Gowns to demand that they be allowed to come home to graduate.  This action and the solidarity protest were organized by the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, one of the Alliance for Global Justice’ fiscally sponsored projects.  AfGJ was there showing support. Following is a report and a call to action:

On Monday July 22, 8 Dreamers came to the border that divides Nogales Arizona from Nogales Sonora, dressed in graduation gowns to demand that President Obama let them come back to their communities in the U.S. and start acknowledging that many people are being deported who should not have been under the current laws. All 8 Dreamers grew up in the United States. More than 100 people came in solidarity for this bi-national demonstration, and when the crowd on the U.S. side reached the border wall, people on both sides erupted into cheers and shouts of solidarity, and reached their hands for each other. AFGJ was there in support and witnessed the energy and strong turnout – especially given that it was a Monday morning.Dreamer 3

While the Obama administration pays lip service to immigration reform, they have been actively deporting more people than any other administration: over 1.7 million people during his administration alone. This has a devastating impact for millions of families who are separated, for millions of immigrants being detained in for-profit prisons, and due to the fear and hatred that has been sparked in this society towards immigrants who are only trying to feed their families.

Border officials detained the 8 Dreamers and held them in Nogales for hours before transferring them to Florence and then to Eloy Detention Center in Arizona.

The campaign is asking for 5,000 calls, right now, in solidarity with the Dreamers, demanding the White House to Bring Them Home.

The campaign is also asking for people to sign petitions in favor of each of the Dreamers being detained, demanding their immediate release.

Call the feds to bring Dreamers home!!! Keep calling.
