The civil war in Colombia began 53 years ago on May 27, 1964. The Colombian government, urged on by the United States, launched an all-out assault against the autonomous zone of Marquetalia. Just six months ago, accords ending the war were implemented. We now have a chance to visit a Colombia on the road to peace, as part of an independent verification project with the Americas Coordination in Defense of Human Rights and the Victims of Political Imprisonment.

We will begin in the capitol city of Bogotá with presentations from human rights defenders, union and student leaders, former political prisoners and government representatives. We will visit rural transition zones in the Departments of Tolima and La Guajira to interview political prisoners and prisoners of war being reintegrated into civil society. We will also take ample opportunity to enjoy cultural events and learn about the histories of places we visit.

The peace process is moving forward. However, it faces many threats. Paramilitary assaults continue at alarming rates. Colombia’s ultra-right is doing what it can both legally and illegally to sabotage the accords. There remain problems in achieving full compliance with the agreements. US policies that prioritize repression over resolution exacerbate the situation.

International awareness, accompaniment and verification are key to defending and advancing the peace. In collaboration with partners from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico and the United States, AfGJ will produce a bilingual report in Spanish and English that will constitute an important resource for advocates of a durable and just resolution to Colombia’s armed conflict.
