Venezuela ZeroDetail: Economic activity in Venezuela increased 12.3% in the first half of 2022 This is mainly explained by the rise in oil production, higher government spending and the end of hyperinflation. In the second quarter the increase was 16.6%, with an increase in oil production of 36.3% by stabilizing the number of daily barrels in the order of 700,000. The Venezuelan economy maintained 27 consecutive quarters of a decline that began in the fourth quarter of 2014 and ended in the third quarter of 2021. This has meant that, as of the second quarter of 2022, the size of the Venezuelan economy has been only 21% of what it was in the second quarter of 2012.

Cuba
Roger Waters, Vijay Prashad, Manolo De Los Santos: Cuba should be removed from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism The designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism by the United States deeply harms the ability of the Cuban government and its people: the immense power of the United States over the world financial system means that banks and traders refuse to do business with Cuba since they are afraid of retaliation by the US for breaking the blockade. Joe Biden can remove this designation with a stroke of his pen. There are currently four countries on that list: Cuba, North Korea, Iran and Syria.

Arnold August: A Canadian Left View on Cuba’s July 26 Moncada Fidel is, in the words of Gabriel García Márquez, “the anti-dogmatist par excellence.” Dogmatism in the revolutionary ranks is often manifested by the stiff and sterile interpretation of what is perceived as “theory.” This dogmatism hinders the capacity to draw from accumulated practical experience – either positive or negative – in order to analyze concrete conditions with the perspective of the future requirements needed to move society forward. Che Guevara also wrote on July 26, 1967 in Bolivia about the significance of that day as “a rebellion against oligarchies and against revolutionary dogmas.” Che was of course referring to dogmatism even infecting revolutionaries.

Isaac Saney: Resistance, Resilience and Renewal: Cuba Commemorates Moncada Cuba is a society where universal education and health care, housing, food, and access to culture are fundamental human rights, and the state — within its limited resources — does its utmost to transform these aspirations into reality. In Cuba there are no homeless children roaming the streets eking out an existence in a dog-eat-dog society where everyone fends for themselves, so characteristic and defining of profit driven and capital centred societies. This commitment is affirmed and ratified by and through Cuba’s system of popular power which provides consequential, concrete, and meaningful input into decision-making by the citizenry. Through mass participation and consultation these historical aspirations are expressed in a political consensus to defend, strengthen, and perfect the revolutionary project.
