Fightback News: Huge election turnout for Maduro’s PSUV 75% of the candidates running are new candidates. All Venezuelans know they can participate in our democratic elections and lead the country. PSUV has thousands of people running in the primaries and often 20 for one seat; whereas, the opposition party only has one person running for each seat because they don’t have enough members. 50% of all candidates in the primaries must be women. More than 60% of the candidates are young. This is a way to build new leadership in the PSUV party. A lot of new young people run in city elections, do a couple of terms and then move up to national elections. We have 60,000 PSUV candidates running.
Fightback News: Revolutionary Venezuelan women collectives at forefront In Venezuela, the communes – community organizations – have the power to choose what projects need to be funded for their communities. Over 47,000 communal councils are registered with the Venezuelan government. They write proposals to the Maduro-led government, then the government provides resources and guidance to support them. The communes have been an effective way to build local leadership, promote collaboration among workers, and improve the economy. Every commune we visited tells us their commune is helping lead the revolution to improve the lives of the people and promote the people’s democracy.
