Eco Solidarity Update Episode 1-Climate Disasters in Caribbean and Around the World

The Alliance for Global Justice is very pleased to announce the launch of our new Eco Solidarity Update series on our Youtube Channel (please subscribe!). Every month, the Eco-Solidarity Update will bring you a program of critical updates, followed by special guest interviews for a more in depth focus. To begin today’s first episode ever, our top story is about climate related disasters that have happened around the world in Vietnam, Pakistan, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Florida, Japan, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Alaska. A series of heavy rains, hurricanes, typhoons, and floods that have hit these areas have all been attributed to climate change. These global warming catastrophes began even as leaders from across the world gathered in New York to kick off the UN’s Climate Week.

AFGJ does more than inform, we take action.  We are asking you to take the following actions for climate justice for Puerto Rico.

1. Send an calling for the contract to NOT be renewed with LUMA, the Texan-Canadian venture that assumed management of Puerto Rico’s electricity grid in June, 2021, followed immediately by a series of harmful power outages. That electric grid started failing even before Hurricane Fiona had made the landfall that left the entire island without power. We also call for the immediate reinstatement of the PREPA public utility company, and its union, which was busted as a result of the privatization.

2. Send an email to Congress demanding legislation in support of the call made by New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to provide $1 billion in nutritional aid and at least $2.9 billion in emergency supplemental disaster recovery aid.

3. Please consider making a contribution to Comedores Sociales de Puerto Rico (Social Soup Kitchens for Puerto Rico), which works constantly for food sovereignty on the island, and is currently providing much needed aid to those who have been dispossessed and displaced because of Hurricane Fiona.
