Tell Sen. Durbin that the US doesn’t choose who is president of Venezuela!

Tell Sen. Durbin that the US doesn’t choose who is president of Venezuela!

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, the second-highest ranking Democrat in the Senate, has endorsed President Trump’s decision to foster a coup in Venezuela by issuing a statement recognizing Juan Guaido, self-proclaimed “president” as the leader of Venezuela. The Washington Post has reported on the US government and the Venezuelan opposition secret talks that led to the coup attempt. The New York Times previously reported that Trump met with disloyal Venezuelan military officers. Sen. Durbin himself went to Venezuela last year and met with opposition leaders. Fill out the form here to send a message to Sen. Durbin that you oppose a US-orchestrated coup in Venezuela.

— Example Letter —

Senator Durbin,
I express my strong objection to your support for the US orchestrated coup in Venezuela. You
stated:
I spoke at length to the new President of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, today. I assured him of my
strong support for a more peaceful and democratic future in Venezuela under his transitional
leadership. The people of Venezuela deserve it.
I call on you to reverse your position and support respect for democracy, national sovereignty
and national dialogue in Venezuela. The Organization of American States has already voted to
reject Juan Guaido proclaiming himself as president of Venezuela by a vote of 18-16. The United
Nations Security Council has also rejected the US coup plot.
Representative Tulsa Gabbard made an honorable statement:
The United States needs to stay out of Venezuela. Let the Venezuelan people determine
their future. We don’t want other countries to choose our leaders–so we have to stop trying
to choose theirs.
As did Representative  Ilham Omar :
A U.S. backed coup in Venezuela is not a solution to the dire issues they face. Trump’s
efforts to install a far right opposition will only incite violence and further destabilize the
region. We must support Mexico, Uruguay & the Vatican’s efforts to facilitate a peaceful
dialogue.

Senator Durbin, join these sensible Representatives and the majority of the international
community, retract your statement and recognize the legitimate elected government of Venezuela
and speak out for peaceful dialogue.
