Venezuela & ALBA News #400, 5.13.2022: Summit of the Americas is Shaping up to Show how Isolated the US has Become

One World (Andrew Korybko): Next Month’s Summit Of The Americas Is Shaping Up To Show How Isolated The US Has Become Several Latin American leaders are threatening to boycott the event if Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela aren’t invited to attend. While Antigua, Barbuda, and Bolivia might not be a big deal in the grand scheme of US strategy towards the hemisphere, Brazil and Mexico’s abstention would make the event utterly meaningless since they alone count for half of the region’s population.Honduras and Bolivia have also signaled their presidents will not go.

18 Congresspeople sign Letter to Biden calling on him to end all Sanctions on Venezuela Letter of May 10, 2022

Miami Herald: Former Pentagon head Esper: Trump’s White House discussed blockade of Cuba and military action in Venezuela In 2019, the Trump administration supported a bid by Juan Guaidó to force Nicolas Maduro to leave the country. On April 30, 2019, Trump threatened Cuba with “a full and complete embargo, together with highest-level sanctions,” if the Cuban government did not “immediately CEASE military and other operations for the purpose of causing death and destruction to the Constitution of Venezuela.”

Multipolarista (Maria Paez Victor): How the imperialist system works, and how Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution resists it The opposite of imperialism today is the movement of Socialism of the 21st Century. It is the hope for the future of Latin America, and the world, against the savagery of imperialism. Many figures on the Western left, in the USA, Canada, and Europe, have claimed for years that Venezuela’s revolution is not truly socialist. These armchair revolutionaries have too often disdained the Bolivarian Revolution because it did not “fit” with their narrow eurocentric theoretical framework. Chávez proclaimed socialism after the fall of the Berlin Wall, after the dissolution of the USSR, after the rumors that history had come to an end. In this way, Chávez showed the world that socialism was not remotely dead. This flew in the face of those who, while professing socialism, were looking for the illusion of a “third way”.

Venezuelanalysis: Venezuela and Iran Deepen Cooperation to Overcome US Sanctions Iran recently said that the country’s crude output had recovered to pre-sanctions figures with 3.8 million barrels per day (bpd). The last OPEC report placed Tehran’s March output at 2.546 million bpd as measured by secondary sources. Iranian light crude has been key to turning PDVSA’s extra-heavy crude into exportable grades helping the South American country achieve a moderate oil output recovery. OPEC placed Caracas’ March output at 697,000 bpd, according to secondary sources.

TeleSur: Venezuelan Oil Recovers With Our Own Effort, Says Maduro “The entire Venezuelan oil industry, the refineries, the upgraders, the petrochemicals are technology dependent on the United States, there are machines that even turn off, as happens with Western technology, that sell a machine (to work) until 2018 and in 2018 it turned off and the only way to turn it on is to change a card and pay a little real (money) so that they put in (insert) the new card for four years, (…) And our technicians, workers, and scientists came and activated everything,” he detailed. According to the Government, current production is between 800,000 and one million barrels per day.

Orinoco Tribune: Only 9% of Venezuelans Back the Opposition The Venezuelan opposition only has 9% support among the people of the country, and former deputy Juan Guaidó’s support has fallen to 4%. The poll also found that a lack of leadership and proposals, as well as corruption, are among the reasons for the opposition’s low numbers.
