Venezuelanalysis: US Confirms No Venezuela Sanctions Relief Without ‘Irreversible Changes’ The US has ruled out lifting sanctions against Venezuela. The blockade, which has hampered Covid vaccination efforts and caused severe fuel and diesel shortages, has been condemned by a range of international actors, including UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres, Pope Francis, and most recently UN Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan, who described it as “devastating” and “illegal.”

Venezuelanalysis: Sanctions, Deadly Instruments of Economic Warfare: A Conversation with Alexander Main (Part II) (Part I here) It is primarily US economic sanctions that have been the cause of the worst economic collapse in Venezuelan and perhaps Latin American history. This is important because most of the media regularly publishes articles about Venezuela’s destroyed economy, and the human costs, with barely a mention – and often no mention at all – of sanctions. Given that it remains targeted by broad sectoral sanctions, Venezuela is not in a position to carry out the economic policies that it would want to. What is needed is a massive recovery plan, with help from other countries and with an influx of cash derived from foreign trade, if Venezuela were able to once again engage in normal trade relations with other countries. But with the US policy of sanctions, it’s not an option. One of the problems we face in the US is that there are very few, if any, progressive-minded individuals inside the Biden administration’s foreign policy machine.

Nicaragua
The Grayzone: How USAID created Nicaragua’s anti-Sandinista media apparatus, now under money laundering investigation This Grayzone investigation illustrates how USAID has helped to create Nicaragua’s anti-Sandinista opposition from the ground up. Since the Sandinistas came to power in 2007, the United States has funneled tens of millions of dollars to opposition groups in Nicaragua through its soft-power arm USAID, a CIA front that has long been used as “humanitarian” cover for operations to destabilize independent left-wing governments, especially in Latin America.
