This panel will look at the history and role of the AFL-CIO in Latin American with a focus on Colombia and Peru. Prior to the formation of the AFL-CIO Solidarity Center which is primarily funded by the National Endowment For Democracy (NED). The American Institute For Free Labor Development (AIFLD), the Solidarity Center’s predecessor, was directly funded by the CIA and played a critical role in US coups and imperialist operations in Latin America. There will be reports on not only this history but the labor struggles today in Peru, and in Colombia where injured GM workers have had an encampment in front of the US Embassy in Bogotá for over 11 years.
