Dan Kovalik is an American human rights, labor rights lawyer and peace activist. He has contributed articles to CounterPunch, The Huffington Post and TeleSUR. He taught International Human Rights at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Kovalik has been involved in international human rights and social justice, mainly in Latin America. Kovalik’s first book, The Plot to Scapegoat Russia, was published in 2017 by Skyhorse Publishing. He was co-author of the book No More War: How the West Violates International Law by Using ‘Humanitarian’ Intervention to Advance Economic and Strategic Interests, which was published by Skyhorse Publishing in 2020.
Year after year, thousands and thousands of young, women, men and elderly people across the country Nicaragua celebrate with joy the anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution that on July 19, 2022 marked 43 years ago the fall of General Anastasio Somoza and his wicked dictatorship. Since 1980, when the first democratic government was decreed in the country, the tributes to the popular revolution have remained marked in the collective memory as the closure of one of the darkest chapters in its history. The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) had succeeded, together with the popular bases, in overthrowing the last of the Somozas, who remained in power from 1937 to 1979.
This last celebration of the Nicaraguan people was full of emotion, multicolor and joy for the thousands and thousands of young people who gathered at the Plaza de la Revolucion where some of the most recognized heroes and martyrs of the Sandinista revolution have their last resting place, such as; Colonel Santos Lopez, Carlos Fonseca, and Tomás Borges. The special guest Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Ralph Gonsalves, said that he asked himself every day, why does the United States attack a nation as small as Nicaragua? President Daniel Ortega responded masterfully with a very educational speech (loaded with Nicaraguan history) that was obviously addressed to the millions of young people in Nicaragua.
